Europe games to help you study

There are two interactive maps that will help you study for this test:

The first one is a puzzle. It gives you the name and puzzle piece of each country. You need to drag each piece to the right place on the map. This game is fun, but you need to play it probably more than 5 times for it to be effective in helping you study. Try it! CLICK HERE.

This map has two parts. On the left side is the map of Europe. On the right side is a box that asks you "Where is..." and gives you a country name. You need to find that country on the map and click on it. If you're right, the second box on the right will say: "That's right ...click next question." Then you need to click the green button below the box that says "Next Qstn." Play until you're finished! CLICK HERE.

Henry Huggins

During this week, you need to finish Henry Huggins!

Andrea and Lizbeth, you left your copies here, so I am putting them with the things for your moms to pick up. :)

Math

Congratulations! You do not need to do any more lessons while you are gone (other than the ones from last week).

Instead, play this FUN game! (Make sure you always ask your parents first, and you are only allowed to play for 30 minutes a day. That is Miss Melby's rule, and she expects you to follow it!).

JumpStart 3-D: I signed our class up for a fun game. In order to get to it, you have to enter this information into the page I'm sending you to: email--  melbytoes@yahoo.com    password: melbyclass   .   Now click Play Now. It will take you to a new page that has "select name." Click on the list and find your name. Then, click LAUNCH. It will probably take you to a page that says you have to install a plug-in. Ask your parents for help. It's a safe plug-in.  Follow the easy instructions, then try playing again! You can play math games, language arts games, history games, and more! BUT YOU HAVE TO HAVE PERMISSION FROM YOUR PARENTS!

Among the Hidden Activity

Hi guys,

Several of you said you had a hard time doing the activity for Among the Hidden (the book we've been reading out-loud). Making a family tree is hard to do from scratch, so I am sending home a chart with your parents that should help you as well as an example of how I did MY family tree. :)

Once you have the charts, read the instructions below.

1. Look at Miss Melby's completed family tree.  On the left side is my father's family, and on the right side is my mother's family. Is that clear so far?

2. First, I wrote in me and my brothers and sisters at the bottom of the page in the middle. I put us in order of oldest to youngest (Rebekah, Lydia, Anna, Daniel, Sarah, and Abigail; Rebekah (me) is the oldest, and Abigail is the youngest). I had to add another box for Abigail.

3. Next, I wrote in my mother and her brothers and sisters (Stanley, Reta, Lisa, Bradley, Matthew) in order. I had to ask her who was oldest, her or her brother Stanley. Reta is my mother.

4. Next, I wrote in my mother's mother's family (the part that says "grandmother" on the RIGHT side). My grandmother, Barbara, is the oldest in her family. She has a sister Lodeema and a brother LeeRoy that are younger than her.

5. Next, I wrote in my mother's father (Cecil). He didn't have any brothers and sisters.

6. Next, I moved over to my father's side of the family. I wrote in my father with all of his brothers and sisters in order (Lisa, Christopher, Sara, Peter, David, and Tina). Peter is my father.

7. Then, I did my father's father's family. My grandfather Clayton was the youngest, and he had two brothers, Frank and Erich.

8. Then I did my father's mother's family. My grandmother Patricia had three sisters that were younger than she was: Wanda, Olga, and Glynn.

9. Now I shaded all the boxes that were extras because I don't need them.

10. Next, I drew a line to connect my father (Peter) and my mother (Reta) to show that they are married.

Now, do you think you understand how I did mine? Let's start with yours.

1. Write in your name (and your brothers and sisters IN ORDER, if you have any). If you have more boxes than you need, shade in the extra ones.

2. Write in your parents' with their brothers and sisters IN ORDER. You will probably have to ask your parents for help with this part so that you make sure you get your aunts and uncles in the right order.

3. Write in your grandparents on your father's side along with their brothers and sisters IN ORDER. Again, you'll probably have to ask your parents who was oldest.

4. Write in your grandparents on your mother's side along with their brothers and sisters IN ORDER.

5. Shade in any extra boxes or add more if you need some.

6. Now, are you finished writing in names? Ok. Get a red pencil and draw a tiny cruz next to the name of every child who was the 3rd born or younger. (Look at my family tree for an example). Remember that in our book, families are only allowed to have 2 children! What does your family tree look like if each parent is only allowed 2 children?

7. Write about how your family would be different and how you would feel. Would you even be here? Would your aunt? What about your brothers and sisters?  You need to write about a page.

8. Staple (grapar) your family tree to your writing and put it in your big envelope to bring back to school.

HISTORY TEST

Hello lovely students!

I am sending home your history test with your parents in an envelope, just like last time. DO NOT OPEN THE ENVELOPE UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO TAKE THE TEST! Once you open the envelope, you may not look at any books or study guides, and you may not ask for help. When you have finished, put your test back into the envelope, seal it up, and have your parents sign the envelope.

This test has to be finished before you come back to school on Monday. :)

Miss you guys!

Love, Miss Melby

P.D. :   I bought M&Ms for whoever finishes their homework. :)

INSTRUCTIONS

To all of my lovely students whom I miss:

This is our class website! For now, it only has the assignments for this break on it. Later, I will add games and more fun things like pictures.

But this lovely website shows you the newest things first. That means that in order to do your assignments in the right order, you need to go all the way to the bottom (Science Assignment for Tuesday).

The history test is not up yet. It will likely be put up tomorrow evening. Please watch for it. If you have ANY questions, you may email me at melbytoes@hotmail.com, you may message me, or you may call me on Skype. :)

Enjoy your break!

Among the Hidden Activity

Think about what would happen to your family if third children and beyond were outlawed (made illegal). Would you have been born? Would your parents have been born? Grandparents?

Draw a family tree back to your grandparents' families and include all of their brothers and sisters. Then, draw a tiny 'X' next to any relative that wouldn't have been born.

Finally, write about 1 page about how you would feel if the government made a law saying your parents could only have two children. Bring your family tree and your writing to school.
